Schizophrenia & Psychosis

What sorts of treatments are available?

The most common treatment for schizophrenia is antipsychotic medication. Research supports the effectiveness of these medications, although they can cause a variety of side effects. At the moment these medications help with symptoms but do not cure the illness and so people often have to take medication for long periods of time.

Medication is often effective in reducing psychotic symptoms, such as delusions and hallucinations, but it is less effective in helping the social and emotional difficulties people face. These problems can be helped with the use of other types of support including:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Working with families
  • Interventions to help with employment.

Schizophrenia can be one of the most serious mental illnesses, although many people with the illness can recover and lead fulfilling lives.
